Why You Should Choose The Pyrenees For Your Next Holiday.
What do you look for in a holiday? Summer sun or Winter snow? Relaxing by the pool or a more active approach like cycling a few famous cols perhaps or a stunning forest walk, maybe a bit of skiing? And at the end of the day, however you’ve chosen to spend it, who provides that tasty evening meal? Do you like to get creative and prepare a feast yourself or would you rather a freshly cooked, locally sourced 3 course meal with wine waiting for you as you relax for the evening?
Before Covid hit, we did a bit of research into what people are looking for in a holiday and the results were, as you’d expect, mixed. Well, for us at Allons y Pyrenees, that’s a great thing as you’ll find out if you keep reading…
Whether you are looking for catered or self-catered accommodation, we’ve got it covered. Our beautiful converted farmhouse and barns all have well-equipped, modern kitchens and plenty or dining space both indoors and outdoors. Our outside dining area, complete with wood-fired pizza oven seats up to 20 guests and with plenty of quieter areas around the site, you’ll be certain to find somewhere that suits your needs. If you’re looking for a catered holiday, then we’ll provide half-board accommodation with a continental style breakfast or brunch and 3 course evening meal – all prepared on-site with locally sourced produce and some fantastic St Mont wine to wash it down with. We'll even support you on the road if you choose a cycling package with us.
And how do you spend your days? If it’s sunshine and a great view that you’re looking for, our sun terrace and large pool with views of the Pyrenees should suffice! If you fancy an afternoon stroll then wander through the village and up to the hidden lake through the forest tracks, passing through fields of sunflowers as you go. Looking for something more active, then grab your bike (or one of our hire bikes) and head out through the rolling hills of the Barronnies or up into the famous cols of the Pyrenees which our gites are named after (the Tourmalet, Aubisque, Aspin). The Bastide towns of the area are worth a visit, especially our local town of Tournay with it’s newly renovated square and eclectic mix of shops. The Bastide café/bar provides a warm welcome for anyone looing for a drink or snack. Visit the many local grottes for a chance see some spectacular cave paintings and stalagmites and stalactites or head to any of the Therme Spa towns and wander around admiring the architecture of the 19th century before treating yourself to a spa session – a two hour treat of whirl pools, steam sensations, saunas and jacuzzies all heated by the thermes themselves.
When the snow falls, this is the perfect location to explore. Grab a Pyrenean ski pass which allows you access to 8 of the local resorts and head off into the wilderness. At Nistos you can snow shoe or cross country ski without the crowds and then stop for a warming garbure at the mountain retreat; La Mongie is just one of our local ski resorts providing plenty of challenges for the avid down-hill skier and with Payolle and Cauterets also included in the PY pass you can try a different resort every day of your stay.
So, whether you’re a Summer sun or Winter snow type of person and whether you want to simply relax with a good book by the pool, visit some of the many tourist attractions or get out on a bike or skis, Allons Y Pyrenees really does have it all. We will tailor make your holiday to suit you, whether you are one person or a group of 20, whether you need airport transfers or have your own car, whether you wish to be left alone or catered for and whether you need supported cycling days out with someone to ride with you or pick ups and drop offs for those longer rides, we can do it all. Let us know what you’re looking for and we will do our best to make it happen.
